Alaska scenic bywayRecognized for its scenic, natural, historical and recreational values, the 127-mile Seward Highway holds triple designation: USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, Alaska Scenic Byway, and All-American Road.Map of Seward scenic highwayThe first 50 miles of the Seward Highway skirts the base of the Chugach Mountains and the shore of Turnagain Arm, where it's common to see beluga whales, Dall sheep, waterfalls and eagles. The remainder of the drive courses through the mountains, offering dramatic views of wild Alaska. The turn-off onto the Sterling Hwy starts at Kenai Lake covered in lilly-padsKenai Lake the head waters of the Kenai River. Just past Cooper Landing is the mouth of the world famous Russian River, one of the spawning grounds the salmon return to on their journey up the Kenai River, which the road follows, through a spectacular canyon before widening out as you hit the valley floor of the Kenai Peninsula. Continuing onto Soldotna, which is only 10 miles from where the mouth of the Kenai River dumps into Cook Inlet. Driving time to Soldotna from Anchorage takes about 3 hours without stopping, but it is recomended to plan for about 5 hours as there are numerous turn-out spots provided for photography, and eating establishments along the way.
